A massive Afghan-NATO offensive against militants who overran several villages in southern Afghanistan continued on Wednesday evening.
Officials said two Afghan soldiers and 23 Taliban militants were killed in initial firefights. Hundreds of Taliban fighters took over villages Sunday night in the Arghandab district of Kandahar province, posing a threat to Kandahar city, 20 kilometres to the south. Afghan and NATO troops were deployed to the region after about 350 Taliban fighters escaped from a Kandahar jail last week. Meanwhile, the International Security Assistance Force says that four British NATO soldiers have been killed and two more wounded by a roadside blast in Helmand province.
