18.06.2008 - UK ratifies Lisbon Treaty despite Irish rejection

Britain's House of Lords has ratified the European Union's reform treaty, making the UK the first country to do so following its rejection by Irish voters.

The Czech Republic news are represented by www.prague-apartments-hotels.com

The Lisbon Treaty passed through the unelected upper chamber, after the house rejected moves by the opposition Conservative party to have the vote delayed because of the result of last Thursday's referendum in Ireland. The outcome has thrown the EU into a crisis of confidence on how to continue with efforts to streamline decision making in the bloc. The treaty needs to be accepted by all 27 members. The issue is expected to dominate a two-day summit of European leaders which begins in Brussels on Thursday.
