NATO and Afghan forces say they've attacked Taliban militants in areas outlying Kandahar city in one of the biggest battles in Afghanistan in recent years.
Kandahar was the scene last Friday of a dramatic jail break by Taliban militants who on Monday seized seven outlying villages. The province's governor has claimed that hundreds of insurgents have since been killed or wounded as the forces drove militants from the Arghandad orchard and farming district to the city's northwest. He said two Afghan soldiers and a civilian had also been killed. But NATO spokesmen declined to confirm the casualty estimate and admitted that last week's Taliban infiltration into Arghandad had been a setback.
