Merkel calls on Irish to approve Lisbon Treaty ... to proceed with the Lisbon Treaty. At a joint press conference with Barroso, Cowen appealed to EU leaders to accept the Irish referendum result and work together with his country. On Wednesday night, Britain gave the treaty a boost by becoming the first country to ratify it since Ireland's rejection. The leaders of Germany and France have called on remaining EU countries to ratify the treaty as well. The Lisbon Treaty, which aims to streamline decision making in the bloc, needs the backing of all members to be adopted.
