The European Union has given Slovakia permission to introduce the euro starting next year.
EU leaders meeting in Brussels gave Slovakia the green light, paving the way for it to become the 16th country to adopt the currency. The European Central Bank said last month that Slovakia met the tough economic criteria for joining. Also on the agenda of the two day leaders summit which began this Thursday, were proposals for dealing with soaring fuel costs and Ireland's rejection of the EU reform treaty.
