A White House spokesperson has said that negotiations with Iraq to secure a long-term security pact are progressing well.
President George W. Bush spoke with Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki by video conference to discuss ways of overcoming disagreements over the the planned Status of Forces Agreement. Last week, Maliki warned that the talks had hit an impasse due to Iraqi concerns about national sovereignty. The agreement aims to replace a United Nations mandate for foreign forces, which expires at the end of this year.
