19.06.2008 - EU leaders grapple with Lisbon Treaty after Irish rejection

European Union leaders meeting in Brussels have refused to set a deadline for a deal on the stalled Lisbon Treaty after its rejection by the Irish.

Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen and European Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso said it was too early to decide the treaty's future. At a joint press conference with Barroso, Cowen appealed to EU leaders to accept the Irish referendum result and work together with his country. On Wednesday night, Britain gave the treaty a boost by becoming the first country to ratify it since Ireland's rejection. The leaders of Germany and France have called on remaining EU countries to ratify the treaty as well. The Lisbon Treaty, which aims to streamline decision making in the bloc, needs the backing of all members to be adopted.
