A satellite that could be crucial in tracking climate change, including rising sea levels and ocean conditions, has been launched from NASA's Vandenberg base in California.
The satellite called Jason 2 is on a joint mission involving the US space agency, Europe's meteological agency EUMETSAT and France's space studies centre. On board Global Media Forum continues ...
Indonesia to withdraw from Opec ... Jason 2 is a powerful radar altimeter for measuring ocean surface heights. Data from previous missions show that since 1993 sea levels have risen on average by 0.3 centimetres per year. That's twice as much as they did in the whole of the 20th century. Meanwhile, officials of the inter-governmental Indian Ocean Commission say satellite imagery from the European Space Agency is being used increasingly to track boats caught overfishing. Tuna stocks, especially, are threatened by illegal and unreported fishing by boats mainly from Taiwan and Indonesia.
