Interior Minister Wolfgang Schäuble says the draft law would strengthen the means available to Germany's Federal Crime Office (BKA) to investigate terrorist suspects and fight international crime. The German minister stressed the perceived threat of "Islamist terrorism". During a parliamentary debate in Berlin, the liberal Free Democrats (FDP), Green Party and Left Party all sharply criticised the proposed legislation, which would also give police the right to conduct online searches and video surveillance.
