German media are reporting that Berlin is preparing to send an extra 1,000 soldiers to Afghanistan.
The deployment would bring the number of Bundeswehr troops participating in the International Security Assistance Force mission to 4,500. The plan has reportedly been on the cards for some time, and is expected to be announced next Wednesday. Germany has come under pressure from NATO allies to increase its commitment to Afghanistan. Some NATO members have called on Germany to redeploy forces from the relatively calm north to the restive south of the country.
