Residents of the US Midwest continued to watch streets, buildings and fields fill with water from the flooding Mississippi River.
The National Weather Service said the river had crested Friday in the metropolitan St Louis, Missouri area, where about 1 million people live, and where moderate flooding continued. More than 20 levees have already broken in Iowa and Illinois, and still more are expected to yield in the coming days after as much as 38 centimetres of rain fell this month in some parts of Iowa. The Midwest flooding has claimed the lives of 24 people and destroyed billions of dollars worth of crops since late May.
