The UN atomic watchdog chief Mohamed ElBaradei said the consequences of any Israeli air strike against Iran's nuclear programme would be catastrophic for the entire region.
His reaction comes one day after reports that Israel conducted a large-scale military exercise this month which US analysts believe was meant to show Israel can attack Iran's nuclear sites. ElBaradei said such a strike would turn the Middle East into a fireball. Iran's speaker of the national assembly, Ali Larijani, was quoted as saying that any Israeli attack would be a grave mistake and that Israel would pay a high price for it.
