The International Whaling Commission is to debate a possible resumption of commercial whaling during its week-long, annual meeting that opens in Santiago, Chile this Monday.
Commercial whaling has been banned since 1986. Animal protection groups say Japan kills around 1000 whales a year under the guise of doing so for research purposes. The whaling commission's 80 member nations are also expected to review global whale and dolphin populations, and consider the creation of a whale sanctuary in the south Atlantic.
