European Union officials have condemned the violence in Zimbabwe that has forced opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to withdraw from the presidential run-off, saying the process was no longer valid. German foreign minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said the withdrawal was a serious blow to the country and the entire region.
Meanwhile South African President Thabo Mbeki, the region's designated mediator, has called for a diplomatic solution to the crisis. Germany's development minister has said she wants African nations to back UN Security Council consideration of the crisis.
