The attacks came as Afghans protested in Nangarhar Province saying two civilians had been killed overnight.
Meanwhile, US-led forces say they have killed 55 militants in clashes in the south-east of the country. There is no independent confirmation.
Innocent
''A suicide attacker driving a four-by-four jeep tried to attack a passing international convoy in Shindand district," Herat's police chief Gen Jumma Adil told the BBC.
"As he tried to get close to the forces, he blew himself up and killed four innocent civilians and injured many more."
He described the attack as "the work of the enemies of Afghanistan", a phrase used to describe the Taleban.
Meanwhile in the Yaqubi district of Khost Province a roadside bomb hit a private car, local governor Mohammad Qasim Mujahid told the BBC.
He said three civilians, including one woman, had been killed.
Blamed
The latest deaths came after officials in eastern Afghanistan said a civilian man and his young son had been killed in fighting overnight between US-led troops and militants in the Khogyani district of Nangarhar Province.
A local official said it was not clear who killed them. The coalition said it could not confirm any civilian deaths.
But a group of 200-300 locals demonstrated, blaming US forces. They shouted "death to America" and called for foreigners to leave the area as well as for compensation to be paid after the deaths of the civilians.
US-led forces say they have inflicted heavy casualties on the Taleban in Paktika Province.
The coalition said it called in air support after the militants ambushed one of its patrols in Paktika Province on Friday.
They say three important leaders were among the 55 militants killed.
A statement said 25 other "anti-Afghan forces" had been injured and three detained.
Meanwhile, Afghan intelligence officials say they have foiled a potential bombing after recovering a pressure cooker packed with explosives in the capital, Kabul.
