French President Nicolas Sarkozy has told the Israeli parliament that Middle East peace is not possible without halting settlements on Palestinian territory.
Sarkozy also condemned Palestinian terrorism in his address to the Knesset, and put himself forward as a potential mediator for peace talks. He did not elaborate on what this suggestion might entail. France takes over the European Union's rotating presidency next month, and as such will become a key member of the Quartet of Middle East peace negotiators, which includes the EU, United States, Russia and United Nations.
