Supporters of former Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif have held violent street-protests against a court-ruling which bans him from elections this week.
In several cities crowds burned effigies and chanted slogans against President Pervez Musharraf and the judiciary. Sharif's party blames Musharraf for disqualifying him from a by-election for a National Assembly seat. A Lahore High Court on Monday accepted arguments that people convicted of criminal charges could not contest elections. Sharif was barred from running earlier this year due to convictions related to his ouster in a military coup led by Musharraf nine years ago.
