The opposition candidate Morgan Tsvangirai has formally withdrawn from the runoff poll against President Robert Mugabe scheduled for Friday because he said his supporters would risk their lives by voting. Tsvangirai himself has taken refuge in the Dutch embassy in Harare after soldiers tried to arrest him on the weekend. The United Nation's Security Council has condemned the violence saying it was impossible to hold free and fair elections under those conditions. The US State Department has said that will reject any attempt by Mugabe to declare himself president if the run-off goes ahead.
