The United States has said that it will not accept Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as the country's legitimate leader if he participates in an election which the opposition has pulled out of. Zimbabwe's ambassador to the United Nations has said his country intends to press ahead with Friday's run-off election, despite the withdrawal of opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai.
Tsangirai is currently sheltering at the Dutch embassy in Harare, after a campaign of violence against his party and its supporters. Meanwhile, members of the Southern Africa Development Community say they will hold an emergency summit in Swaziland on Wednesday to discuss Zimbabwe's political crisis. This follows a United Nations Security Council condemnation of Mugabe's regime for making it impossible to hold free and fair elections.
