Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili has met with German officials, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, in Berlin.
Georgia's strained relationship with Russia topped the agenda. German Chancellor Angela Merkel said Berlin shared Georgia's concern about Russia's actions in the breakaway region of Abkhazia where tensions between the two ex-Soviet states have soared. Relations between Russia and Georgia have deteriorated since Saakashvili came to power in 2004. The former Soviet republic wants the European Union and Germany to help mediate an end to the rift.
