United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has urged the Ugandan rebel group, the Lord's Resistance Army, to release women and children currently in its ranks.
In a report to the Security Council, Ban said there were no indications that the LRA was recruiting in Uganda, but he cited allegations of fresh conscription of child soldiers in neighbouring countries. UNICEF estimates that at least 25,000 children have been kidnapped since 1988. In the past, LRA chief Joseph Kony has rejected claims of abduction and conscription of children.
