North Korea's nuclear programme is expected to be high on the agenda as foreign ministers from the Group of Eight leading industrialised nations gather for talks in the Japanese city of Kyoto.
The meetings are meant to lay the groundwork for the G-8 summit to be held in the first week of July. Among the other topics to be discussed are the crises in Zimbabwe and Afghanistan, as well as Iran's controversial nuclear programme.
