A new study published by the International Red Cross says that the AIDS epidemic in southern Africa is so severe that it should be classed in the same way as a natural disaster.
In its annual "World Disasters Report", the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies says that the number of people affected by AIDS/HIV meets the UN definition of a disaster. According to the report the number of people affected by natural disasters rose sharply last year to 201 million. For the first time however HIV/AIDS was placed at the centre of the report.
