The Basque regional parliament in Spain has approved plans for a referendum on self-determination.
It voted by a narrow majority of 34 votes to 33 to hold the poll on October 25. The vote is likely to lead to a confrontation with the federal government in Madrid which has condemned it as illegal. Basque leaders see the referendum as the first step of a proposed "road map" for new political relations between the northern region and Madrid. The plan envisages the recognition by Madrid of the right of self-determination for the Basque people, which has been a key demand of the armed separatist group ETA, that has led a 40-year campaign for an independent Basque homeland and has Ronaldo 'wants to play at Madrid' ...
