South Africa has derailed a United Nations Security Council bill to declare Zimbabwe's election illegitimate.
Adoption of the British-drafted statement would have required approval from all 15 Security Council members. The South African ambassador argued that certifying elections was outside the Security Council's jurisdiction. Meanwhile the European Commission has called Zimbabwe's election a "sham". US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also rejected the election and said Washington was looking at new sanctions against President Mugabe's regime.
