North Korea has blown up the cooling tower of its atomic reactor in a controlled demolition.
The action has been seen as a dramatic symbol of the country's commitment to nuclear disarmament, one day after it handed over details of its atomic programmes. TV footage showed the 30-metre tower reduced to smoking rubble in seconds. The reactor at Yongbyon produced the plutonium for a weapons programme which culminated in a nuclear test in October 2006.
