28.06.2008 - UN Security Council condemns Zimbabwe election

The United Nations Security Council has condemned the second round of Zimbabwe's presidential election, saying the conditions for a free and fair vote did not exist in the country.

leading industrialised nations meeting in Japan issued a joint statement saying they couldn't accept the legitimacy of a vote, which didn't reflect the will of the Zimbabwean people. The incumbent president, Robert Mugabe is virtually certain of winning the election, after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out, due to what he said was a government campaign of violence against supporters of his Movement for Democratic Change. Tsvangirai won the first round of the election on March 29, but didn't get the more than 50 per cent of the vote needed to avoid a run-off.
