Party leader Jiri Paroubek then told journalists that the CSSD did not intend to return to the problem of deserters any longer, focusing on success in the autumn regional and Senate elections instead. Social Democrat representatives had a meeting of the party's central executive committee today. Jaroslav Foldyna, CSSD election leader in the North Bohemian region, told journalists Paroubek had mentioned him critically four times in connection with his Czech CSSD chairman calls on Wolf to give up mandate of MP ...

Foldyna said the leadership of the party, the deputies' group and district and regional organisations should shoulder the responsibility. Foldyna had a verbal exchange with Paroubek, CSSD shadow foreign minister Lubomir Zaoralek and deputy chairman of CSSD deputies David Rath. After Social Democrat Petr Wolf left the deputies' group last weekend, some said the group's leaders should bear responsibility for it.
Wolf is the fourth deputy to have left the CSSD deputies' group since the 2006 election. Milos Melcak and Michal Pohanka left the CSSD because they enabled the formation of the coalition government of Mirek Topolanek (Civic Democrats, ODS) in January 2007. Evzen Snitily was expelled from the party because he voted for Vaclav Klaus, ODS honorary chairman, in the presidential elections earlier this year, though the Social Democrats nominated Jan Svejnar. Some CSSD representatives claim the ODS was behind Wolf's departure and speak of corruption. Similar speculations appeared in connection with Melcak, Pohanka and Snitily. The ODS dismissed the accusations and say the deputies left because of a bad atmosphere in the CSSD. Paroubek has spoken about the deserters' moral decay as they vote in contradiction with the programme for which they were elected. In this, Paroubek was backed by former health minister, mental therapist Ivan David. Wolf has said he would support the planned U.S. radar base in the Czech Republic, a project resolutely opposed by the Social Democrats.
