Bush says he is seeking US sanctions against the "illegitimate" government of Zimbabwe, calling Friday's presidential election a "sham." He also said he would press for UN action, including an arms embargo. German Foreign Minister Frank Walter Steinmeier described Zimbabwe's election as a farce considering that the incumbent Robert Mugabe was the only presidential candidate in the race. Steinmeier welcomed a decision by the UN Security Council to discuss Zimbabwe in the weeks ahead and said the European Union would consider what additional steps it could take. The announcements come as Zimbabwean government authorities said Mugabe is likely to be sworn in for a new term on Sunday.
