French President Raymond Poincare of the time recognised Czechs' and Slovaks' right to their own independent state.
To commemorate the event, June 30 has been celebrated as the Czech Armed Forces Day since 2002. Topolanek said that since not all countries were as lucky as to live in peace, "we still need heroes in missions in Afghanistan and elsewhere." Czech and Slovak volunteers started fighting in France against the Central Powers in 1915.
