A Bundeswehr rapid reaction force is set to take over responsibility from a Norwegian force in northern Afghanistan.
A handover ceremony is to be held in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif. This is the first time that Germany has sent combat troops as part of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force. The move comes in response to a request from NATO. Prior to the departure of the 200-strong force from Germany, Defence Minister Franz-Josef Jung warned that due to what their mission entailed, they would be putting themselves in harm's way. Germany is the lead nation in ISAF's northern sector. Germany has around 3,500 troops in Afghanistan.
