The Czechs ended 68th out of the 149 world countries that have provided basic data for the rating, released in a special issue of the Newsweek weekly.
The neighbouring Slovakia was placed 17th in the EPI standings. Out of European countries, only Macedonia, Moldova, Romania and Ukraine were assessed worse than the Czech Republic. Slovakia to join the euro next year ... the environment on the basis of 25 criteria, such as the quality of water and air, public health and agriculture policy. They are assessed on the scale from 0 to 100. However, Czech Environment Ministry spokesman Jakub Kaspar said the EPI methodology for calculating the performance is not sufficiently transparent. "We [Czech Republic] have problems, for instance, in air protection, but European surveys have shown that we definitely do not belong among the worst," he told CTK. Newsweek, on its part, writes that EPI is the best known tool to assess environmental protection, being worked out by experts from the U.S. Yale and Columbia universities.
