The African Union summit taking place in Egypt appears deeply divided over how to respond to the on-going political crisis in Zimbabwe.
International condemnation of the re-election of Robert Mugabe has failed to find unified resonance at the summit in the resort of Sharm-el-Sheikh. Mugabe spokesman, George Charamba, told reporters that the West can "go hang" over its criticism of the Zimbabwean president. Opposition secretary-general, Tendai Biti, who is currently on bail on treason charges strongly denied that his party, the Movement for Democratic Change, had been holding talks with Mugabe's ZANU-PF party and were on the verge of agreeing to form a national union government. He dismissed the suggestions as false and malicious. Elsewhere, Italy has recalled its ambassador to Zimbabwe.
