Thousands of people have staged a violent protest in Mongolia's capital after the ruling party declared victory in Sunday's parliamentary elections.

The roughly 6,000 protesters from the rival Democratic Party, which claims the MPRP bought votes and used other tactics to win the election, threw rocks at firefighters who arrived to put out the blaze. Police at the scene repeatedly fired what appeared to be rubber bullets into and above the crowd. There were no reports of casualties. The MPRP, a former communist party, claims it won 45 seats in the 76-seat parliament, while the Democrats reportedly won 21 seats. The General Election Committee has not yet made any formal announcement on the ballot.
