01.07.2008 - State of emergency imposed in Mongolia

Mongolian President Nambaryn Enkhbayar has declared a four-day state of emergency after thousands of people staged violent protests in Mongolia's capital following Sunday's parliamentary elections.

Rioters reportedly set fire to and looted the headquarters of the Mongolian People's Revolutionary Party in the centre of Ulan Bator after the ruling party declared victory in the elections. Around 6,000 protesters from the rival Democratic Party, which claims the MPRP bought votes to win the election, threw rocks at fire-fighters who arrived to put out the blaze. Police at the scene repeatedly fired rubber bullets into and above the crowd. The General Election Committee has not yet made any formal announcement on the ballot.
