Nearly two-thirds of the two countries' residents are in favour or rather in favour of nuclear energy, while the EU average is 44 percent. The survey, conducted among around 27,000 people in the EU-27 early this year, revealed that opinions on the use of nuclear energy are different in countries which have nuclear power plants on their territory and in countries which have no nuclear power plants. States whose residents are more positive about nuclear energy than the EU average belong to the group of 15 EU countries that have a nuclear power plant. Besides the Czech Republic and Slovakia, also Belgium, Bulgaria, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, the Netherlands, Romania, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Great Britain have at least one nuclear power plant. A May survey by the Public Opinion Research Centre (CVVM) showed that opinions of the Czech public on nuclear energy are more balanced.
Forty-four percent consider nuclear energy an energy with little or no risk, while 43 percent see an environmental problem in the operation of nuclear power plants. It is about 10 percent less compared with 2006, though.
