The US has formally submitted a draft resolution to the UN Security Council calling for tough sanctions against Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and members of his government.
The proposed sanctions, which include a travel ban and a freeze on assets, come after last week's widely condemned presidential run-off vote. Mugabe won the election unopposed in a run-off ballot after opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai pulled out of the voting because of attacks on his supporters. South Africa, Russia and China oppose the idea of sanctions. US Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said he expected the Council to vote on the resolution sometime next week.
