The 46-year-old who holds both Colombian and French citizenship will be welcomed by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Betancourt and 14 other hostages were rescued two days ago by Colombian army commandos posing as FARC guerrillas. Before leaving Bogota, the former presidential candidate vowed to work tirelessly for the freedom of some 700 people still believed to be detained by the leftist rebels. Betancourt who was the highest profile captive held by FARC was taken hostage six years ago. Sarkozy had vowed to make her release a priority of his presidency.
