A moderate earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter Scale has rattled parts of northeastern Iran.
The quake struck early Friday morning causing panic and sending thousands of people into open areas. Dozens of homes were damaged but there were no reports of any casualties. Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating. The worst quake in recent times hit Bam in southeastern Kerman province in December 2003, killing 31,000 people.
