The United States has opened its new 83-million-euro embassy in Berlin, close to the landmark Brandenburg Gate.
4,500 people, including Chancellor Angela Merkel, were invited to the Independence Day opening party. Former US president George Bush Senior and ambassador to Germany William Timken together cut a red ribbon to symbolically let guests enter the building, which is on the site of the pre-Second-World-War US embassy. For decades under communism, the land was part of the no-man's land along the Berlin Wall. Staff moved into the building several weeks ago.
