The European Union has expressed concern about the rising violence in Georgia's breakaway region of South Ossetia, and called on all sides to show restraint.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Friday urged Georgia to sign a legally binding document to prevent aggression in Georgian breakaway regions. This came after at least two people in South Ossetia were killed in clashes between Georgian soldiers and separatists. Moscow's demand followed announcements that separatists were mobilising reserves to counter a potential Georgian threat. Georgia's Abkhazia and South Ossetia regions broke away from central rule during wars against Tbilisi during the 1990s.
