The London-based group, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, said in a statement that military police killed tens of inmates while putting down a riot over conditions. Syrian authorities have not confirmed the incident or responded to the report. Syria holds hundreds of Islamist militants and other political prisoners and International human rights groups often complain of random arrests and torture in Syrian jails.
