The Group of Eight summit has opened on the Japanese island of Hokkaido with surging oil and food prices as well as climate change set to dominate the agenda.
Leaders of the world's industrialised nations -- Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Russia and the United States -- are to be joined this year by those of some 15 other countries including China, India, Brazil, South Korea and Australia.
