The British government has raised doubts over European targets to source 10 percent of transport fuels from biofuels by 2020. Britain's Transport Secretary Ruth Kelly said current goals were no longer backed by scientific advice.
The statement comes after a new British government report warned that uncontrolled biofuel production could lead to higher food prices and increase greenhouse gas emissions. Kelly said that though Britain backed the EU target, it now believes biofuel production should be slowed down. She proposed a new target of sourcing between 5 to 8 percent of transport fuels from biofuels by 2020.
