Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki says his country wants some kind of timetable for a US withdrawal of troops included in ongoing negotiations with Washington.
It was the first time that Baghdad's Shiite-led government has made a pullout deadline a condition for a new agreement with the US to keep troops into 2009. US president George W. Bush and Maliki agreed in principle last November to sign a Status of Forces Agreement in Iraq by the end of July. This was to set the basis for a US troop presence beyond December this year.
