The United States is due to sign a missile defence treaty with the Czech Republic.
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is to sign the agreement with her Czech counterpart Karel Schwarzenberg in the Czech capital this Tuesday. The United States is also trying to close a deal with Poland to base a number of interceptor rockets as part of the system. The Polish government is seeking more military aid from the US, but both sides say they are committed to a deal. Washington says the shield is aimed at potential attacks from countries like Iran. Russia strongly opposes the shield, which it considers a threat.
