08.07.2008 - Half of Czechs wish radar treaty not to be approved by MPs - poll

The opposite opinion was expressed by 34 percent of those polled, and 18 percent said they do not know whether the radar treaty should be approved by parliament and the president. The poll was conducted on July 4-7 on 646 respondents. It showed that 47 percent of Czechs believe that parliament should take a vote on the radar only after the U.S.

wait, and 27 percent said they do not know, the poll showed. About 57 percent of Czechs believe that after the NATO summit in April it is probable that the U.S. radar will become part of NATO defence. Forty-three percent of respondents said they believed the opposite, according to the poll. The STEM poll has unveiled that 43 percent of Czechs did not know about U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's forthcoming arrival in Prague, while 57 percent knew about it. The radar treaty will take effect only when approved by Czech parliament and signed by the Czech president. The centre-right government, however, is not sure of a sufficient support for the radar plan in parliament. The USA says the radar base, part of Washington's anti-missile shield in Europe, would protect the USA and a large part of Europe against hostile missiles countries such as Iran might launch.
