09.07.2008 - U.S. radar base to use Czech energy

An oil generator at the radar base will only serve as a reserve source, Obering said. There have been speculations on what energy the radar base will use in the Czech Republic. Obering said it was preposterous that the Americans in the Brdy region, where the base may be built, would construct a small nuclear plant. signed on Tuesday. Obering repeated that the radar would be quite safe. One can be hit by more radiation while standing near a microwave oven than next to the radar, Obering said. The radar equipment from the Marshall Islands is to be shipped to the Czech Republic. Czechs and Americans still conduct negotiations on the SOFA treaty that defines the conditions of the stay of the U.S. personnel. Obering confirmed that Czechs and Americans still had not agreed on the taxes to be paid by the base personnel. As the radar base would enhance the Czech Republic's protection, the country will thus benefit from the Americans' stay, he added. Most Czechs are opposed to the project. Obering said over 75 percent of Americans agreed with it. The radar treaties must be ratified by Czech parliament and signed by President Vaclav Klaus to take effect.
