The United Nations has confirmed that seven peacekeepers of the joint UN-African Union peacekeeping mission in Sudan's Darfur region have been killed in an attack by suspected Arab militiamen. UN headquarters in New York said 22 troops were also injured, seven of them critically, when their convoy was ambushed by heavily-armed militiamen in North Darfur.
UN secretary general, Ban Ki Moon, condemned the attack, believed to be the work of Arab Janjaweed militia. The attack was the latest in a series of violent encounters between militia groups and the UNAMID mission since its arrival in Darfur in December last year.
