Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has said he would seek a confidence vote in his government.
The reason for the decision is that his communist allies withdrew their support to protest a nuclear deal with the United States. Singh's office said the date will be likely announced on Friday. A defeat for the government in a no-confidence vote would trigger an early election, probably destroying chances of the nuclear pact going ahead. Critics of the deal say it gives the US too much influence over the country. The nuclear pact would give India access to US resources and technology in its move to seek new fuel sources.
